PEEKABOO THEORY WINS INAUGURAL "BATTLE OF SAM" 2009 BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Event Showcased Top Area Bands Performing For Coveted Opening Slot for National Act at The Showgrounds This Summer

HOUSTON (June 17, 2009)— And The Winner Is…The unique rock/groove/hip-hop style of Peekaboo Theory (www.myspace.com/peekabootheory) propelled the Houston-based band to victory in the inaugural “Battle of Sam” 2009 Battle of the Bands competition on Saturday, June 6 at The Showgrounds at Sam Houston Race Park (www.theshowgrounds.com) presented by Houston Press.

Peekaboo Theory
beat out 19 other semi-finalists and earned the right to perform along with 9 other finalists on June 6 on the side stage at The Park.  The competition, which was judged by radio personalities Outlaw Dave from KPRC 950 AM and Theresa from the Rod Ryan Morning Show on 94.5 The Buzz along with Houston Press Music Listings Editor Craig Hlavaty, witnessed a variety of music from reggae to DJ-based groove bands to rock.
Peekaboo Theory received $1,250 cash, $1,000 music gear, 20 hours of recording time courtesy of In The Jar Studios (www.inthejarstudios.com), a photo shoot from MCA Photography, a press kit and online social marketing, and will have the opportunity to open for a national touring act later this summer as part of the Verizon Wireless Summer Concert Series on the Bud Light Stage at The Showgrounds.

“We had an awesome time performing and we are really excited about being able to bring our fans back to The Showgrounds to perform on that huge stage later this summer.  We are ready to lay down some new tracks and get more new music into the market and this prize package will enable us to do that much sooner than we planned,” said Peekaboo Theory band member Anthony Payne.

With few points separating the top bands, local favorites Glass Intrepid (www.glassintrepidband.com) earned second place honors and newcomers Adamantium (www.myspace.com/adamantium36) nabbed a third place victory.  Both bands walked with cash prizes.  The bands were scored on crowd participation, stage presence, instrument & vocal ability, songwriting ability and attendance.

“We had a great first-year event and look forward to building on this platform for future events,” said Gina Rotolo, Director of Marketing & Media Relations, Sam Houston Race Park.  “We look forward to working with the local and regional music scene and help acts grow in this market by providing them a unique opportunity to perform at a 15,000 capacity venue.  We think this event will help winning bands propel their careers and enhance our live music product at the same time.”
